Cormac Breatnach

Dublin-born Low Whistle player Cormac Breatnach was immersed in the Irish musical tradition from early childhood. His first recording was when he was a member of Donal Lunny’s Celtic Orchestra in 1985.

Throughout his long career he has played with artists as diverse as Elvis Costello, Vanessa Williams, Donal Lunny, Bernard Purdie and Susan McKeown and has recorded many albums to date. Cormac’s music is highly influenced by jazz and blues.

Cormac launched a Concept CD ‘Éalú’ (meaning escape) in 2012 featuring Irish, Basque, Castilian and new compositions including two songs – you can also see and hear on the website (a) an introductory animation and (b) a spoken introduction to this album.

A more recent project has evolved into an album, The Whistleblower, and an accompanying documentary, as well as a series of six short videos to accompany each of the six tunes he has written in response to the family’s trauma after his brother was falsely arrested in 1976.
